It's come to the attention of cats that when discussing catnip, many humans don't know what they're talking about. They ask things like: what is catnip? They know so little about catnip plants, catnip plant care, how to plant catnip, how to give your cat catnip, etc.; frankly, this worries us. Because if you don't know about catnip – the most important thing in any cat's life! – what else don't you know about cats in general?!

So what about you? How much do you know about cats? To find out whether you belong in cat college or kitty kindergarten, here's our second How Well Do You Know Cats? Quiz. (In case you missed it, you can still take our first quiz here).

Answer these 15 quickfire questions, add up your score, and we'll let you know how you've done at the bottom.

Take Our Cat Quiz – Edition 2!

1. What is a group of kittens called?

A) Posse

B) Clowder

C) Kindle

D) Chromebook

Correct Answer: C) Kindle

A posse is more likely to refer to a group of cowboys. A clowder is a group of adult cats (bonus fact!). A Chromebook is a type of laptop – you know that, right? And yes, a Kindle is also a type of e-reader (other brands are available), but it's also the name for a group of kittens! Fun!

2. Which part of our cat body is as unique as a human fingerprint?

A) Our lovely cute noses.

B) Our lovely cute paw pads.

C) Our lovely cute whiskers.

D) Our lovely cute extra legs.

Correct Answer: A) Our lovely cute noses

Whilst our paw pads are undeniably cute, and our whiskers are undeniably cute and quite useful, it's our nose prints that are completely unique. If you ever see a Kitty Cop questioning a suspect down at the Kitty Cop Shop in Whisker City, you'll definitely see them taking their nose prints. Cats don't have extra legs.

3. What sound do we usually make when feeling threatened or angry?

A) We purr

B) We meow

C) We hiss

D) We say: 'Stop it I don't like it.'

Correct Answer: C) We hiss

Purring happens for various reasons, but it doesn't tend to be an act of aggression or self-defense. We normally meow to humans. We hiss when feeling threatened or angry. It's like saying, 'Hiss off'. But we rarely say, 'Stop it. I don't like it.' If we do appear stressed, just give us some catnip (free hit).

4. Which breed of cat is well known for its extra toes?

A) Siamese

B) Persian

C) Maine Coon

D) Tabby Tentoes

Correct Answer: C) Maine Coon

Our Maine Coon brethren really do have extra toes, a condition known as polydactylism. It's not polite to stare, though, so if you ever notice, don't make a big deal of it.

5. What's the deal with whiskers?

A) Their job is to look cute

B) Their job is to help us navigate and sense surroundings

C) Their job is to scare away predators

D) Their job is to tickle humans

Correct Answer: B) They help us navigate and sense surroundings

Our whiskers are indeed cute (see also question 2) and tickly, but neither is that their purpose, nor is it likely to scare away predators, so the answer is B – our whiskers are super sensitive and help us detect changes in our surroundings, like an in-built navigation system.

6. How much of our cat life is spent grooming?

A) 1%

B) 10%

C) 30%

D) 100%

Correct Answer: C) 30%

If you wanna look this good, you have to put the effort in – basically, our routine is EAT, SLEEP, GROOM, REPEAT, with a big focus on the sleeping and grooming bits. Catnip is not mentioned in that routine, but that's because we just assume you know the law, which is, you have to give us Cat Crack.

7. Which is our most highly developed sense?

A) Hearing

B) Sight

C) Smell

D) Nonsense

Correct Answer: A) Hearing

Our hearing is incredibly sharp – this enables us to detect the sound of a can opener from many rooms away. It also means you don't need to play music so loudly, especially Guns N' Roses, although we do like the track Purradise City.

8. Why do we like boxes?

A) We're lazy by nature

B) We're curious by nature

C) We're nocturnal by nature

D) We're the East Coast rappers Naughty By Nature

Correct Answer: B) We're curious by nature

We love boxes. What could be inside? We just have to find out! Usually, it's nothing. (Note: contrary to popular opinion, curiosity doesn't always kill the cat. If it did, we'd have evolved to be far more cautious).

9. How should you properly take care of a catnip plant so us cats can enjoy it?

A) Plant it in a shaded spot and water it heavily

B) Plant it in a sunny spot and water it moderately

C) Plant it in a shaded spot and water it moderately

D) Keep it in a dark cupboard, occasionally smoking its leaves

Correct Answer: B) Plant it in a sunny spot and water it moderately

Please pay attention: catnip is for us, not you. No, we don't mind you trying some fresh catnip leaves or catnip flowers from a catnip plant you've grown yourself, perhaps to make tea or something, but it won't have any dramatic effect on you, because you're not a cat. So it's best really if you just leave us to enjoy it.

10. What's the average lifespan of an indoor cat?

A) 1-2 years

B) 10-12 years

C) 15-20 years

D) 100-200 years

Correct Answer: C) 15-20 years

Indoor cats tend to live longer than our outdoorsy cousins – that doesn't mean we're happier though. Although, to be honest, if we're warm and well-fed and you supply us with premium quality catnip on a regular basis, the outdoor world will start to look pretty overrated.

11. How many bones do we have in our bodies??

A) 30

B) 130

C) 230

D) 15,930

Correct Answer: C) 230

We have more bones than you, because we are more flexible, more agile and better in general.

12. Is catnip safe for cats?

A) Yes

B) No

C) Only if they are adults

D) Only if the cats have passed their Mandatory Pre-Catnip Medical at an approved MPCM assessment center.

Correct Answer: A) Yes

100% natural catnip is safe for cats of all ages – it may not work on young kittens under the age of 6 months, and it doesn't work on all cats – we need to have the 'catnip gene' – but it's non-toxic, so when used responsibly, it cannot harm us. So there's no such thing as an MPCM – don't be silly/gullible.

13. Which of the following is toxic to cats?

A) Chicken

B) Chocolate

C) Catnip

D) Christmas

Correct Answer: B) Chocolate

Chocolate can cause us serious health issues, so when considering gifts for Christmas (which we do celebrate, maybe because of all the boxes we can jump into), forget chocolate, focus on catnip. And what is catnip? It's a completely natural, non-toxic herb from the cat mint family.

14. What is the function of the Jacobson's organ?

A) To detect pheromones

B) To enhance the sense of taste

C) To improve balance

D) To accompany hymns in church

Correct Answer: A) To detect pheromones

The Jacobson's Organ, located on the roof of our mouths, helps us detect pheromones, thus playing a crucial role in communication and mating behavior.

15. Why do we rub our faces on stuff/you?

A) Because we need to scratch an itch

B) Because we want to mark our territory

C) Because we hate it/you

D) Because we think everything is potentially a magic lamp which produces catnip

Correct Answer: B) Because we want to mark our territory

It's a way of leaving our scent and saying, 'This is mine!'

What did you score, and what does it mean?

Give yourself a point for each right answer, and then check yourself below:
